i'm new to this forum so bare w/me.

i just inherited my brother's bmw. (mine went up in flames when the gas line broke). it's an *amazing* car but here are the symptoms of the problem its having:

- at first starting up, after 5 seconds it shuts off

- after restarting i have to allow engine to warm up. while doing so, the rpm's race up high and low and occassionally when it reaches 0 it just shuts off again.

- even after the engine is warm and i start driving, it misfires (the car pulls back as if it's stalling and wants to shut off). i have to put it in neutral and press the gass to prevent from shutting off.

- when traveling at 35 then need to come to a stop, the rpm's once again alternates between highs and lows and usually the engine shuts off and needs to be restarted.

here's what i've done;
- changed the oil
- installed brand new high-performance ignition coils from the bavarian autosport site ($275 set of 6).
- new oxygen sensor was already replaced (so i've been told but i have re-check)

the instructions that came with the ignition coils said to look out for oil leakage in the oil casket valve. this could cause the engine to misfire (sounds familiar, ok). the guy i spoke to (bavauto site) mentioned to avoid using platinum spark plugs. so far, these are the only leads i have. if anyone has come across this problem and has any ideas, please sling them my way. i'll buy you a beer :) [:I]

the fuel pump is fine. oxyen sensor is brand new. so i went w/someone's suggestion that it might the ICV.

i (btw, i'm a chick [:X] ) just got a new Idle Control Valve and in the process of replacing it, noticed that one of the hoses that connects to it was badly torn. so now i've ordered the hose. so far i've spent about $400 [?|]

- new ICV $130
- new coils $250 (bavarianauto site)
- ICV hose $26

i'll follow up w/my progress and put an end to this ongoing mystery. thnx guys!

I had a similar problem with my 540 and it turned out to be the air intake bellows, between the air filter and the intake. So, I'd say the hose to the icv or any other hose allowing too much air could be the problem. Is it setting any codes?
