I ahve been recently in the market for a used bmw 3 series and i came across a 96' 318is with a 5 speed and 40,000 miles. I took a test drive but i had one concern, when downshifting into a turn the rev's jumped without the gas being pressed. This happened one other time at a stop sign where i came to a stop and the revs jumped.

i was wondering if this is a recall or should i stay away from this car because it doesn't seem like when it is idleing the revs should jump. I'd appreciate help because im new to the bmw market and don't know everything.

First off, Hello and welcome!

Re: Based on the information you provided, it's hard to tell if there is a problem.

Are you letting go of the clutch while turning? (That is, are you engaging a lower gear while turning?)
--> If this is it, then I'm sure you know that when you downshift and release the clutch without pressing the gas, the engine rev is going match up to the proper ratio as it should. So if you're going 35 in your turn and you down shift from 3rd to 2nd, and your doing 30mph, the rpms are going to jump. This, to me seems obvious; if you've ever driven a stick before, you already know this, which leads me to believe you are referring to some other problem.

I have experience on my car that when turning in nuetral, my rpms actually dipped; that turned out to be MAF boot.

Provide more detail and I' sure someone could be of more help.

BTW, I love my 318is, great little car. If you buy it, you're going to love it.

Also, check to see it has all the maintenance records.

Good luck,
Sean
