This will vary by year. Use http://www.bmwworld.com/models/years/1998.htm to find the specifics by year.

As to mpg - some bmw's even run on regular gasoline! For instance, my 1998 328i convertible runs regular and I get 20mpg putting around town (and I do get on it light to light.) And thats automatic with 190hp @ 5,300 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque @ 3,950 rpm

dude, 328 requires premium gas. People who concern with mpg should not buy BMW in the first place anyway

BMW manual recommends 89 or higher US fuel, the engine can adjust to the fuel lower than 89 but will not be as effective.

if by BMW, you mean damn a gas guzzling SUV, then you are correct [;)]

have you seen the projected gas milage for the new e90 motors? they get more horses and 15% better gas milage to boot!

Get a 328, one of the last years of the e36 like the '98 or 97. They have less problems than the earlier e36. I recently drove 8 hours straight hi-way driving and got 32 mpg. City is around 24 and combo is around 26-27. Damn good gas mileage if you ask me, awesome engine, great handling and easy to work on. Just start looking for a late model e36 328, be patient and you'll find the perfect one.

I just calculated my gas milage: I'm getting about 250 miles out of full tank of premium gas which is 16 gallons, it means I get just 15.6mpg, lol. It's mixed city/highway driving (50/50). I guess it's driving style, I just can't drive slow in this Messerschmitt ;)

I dont mean to sound like my dad teaching me math when I was younger but, I'm figuring you're not driving until you stall from running out of gas-right? So fill the tank, zero out the odom, drive until you are low, take notice of the mileage on the odom, fill up (don't top off) the tank, and record the gallons you just put in. Then divide the mileage on the odom with the what you just put in the tank. I bet you'll end up with better than 16 mpg. If this is what you are doing then sorry to wasted you time, maybe I'm way too much like my dad [:D]

Dude, I don't dive untill I run out of gas, last time I pulled to gas station it was 205 miles on trip odometer and still some gas left in the tank so I assumed I can drive untill 250 in that gas left. I agree that this method is not accurate, I just never cared about my mpg, it's not a commuter car, I don't drive it to work every day and refill the tank maybe 1-2 times per month so I don't really care about mpg, I just drive it for fun and I drive it hard.

I dropped in a stock replacement K&N in beginning of this week. My city driving MPG went from 19.9 mpg to 22.3

I am taking the car on a NJ to SC trip in may = it will be interesting to see what I can get out of her highway wise.

328i mpg

I have to admit that i too, do not pay much attention to my mpg. Since i drive mainly to the golf course, the Joint Reserve Base and those trips are a combination of highway and local streets...... i am getting 27 mpg. That's keeping the speedo at 80 mph on the highway. (Got a jammer in the window) But as noted before, buy the 328 for driving fun and after market mods. You can't go wrong [bash]

Deffinately, go for the 328. More power, flatter torwue curve and most probably better fuel economy. All in all a better car.
