528i Transmission Replace or Rebuild?

I'm driving a 1997 528i with 81,000 miles

Today, I heard the transmission needs work. The BMW dealership advised it to be replaced but the cost is over $4,000. Is rebuilding instead an option?

I'm not very transmission-savy, so suggestions welcome.

I don't know...but is it an automatic?
I think my 1993 525it tranny is going too and I was wondering how much it was going to cost.

Try some of the aftermarket suppliers who sell rebuilts they are a lot less expensive and come with a warranty. There is nothing wrong with a rebuilt if it is done right by a reputable shop.
