I am kind of new to the bmw world and probably going to buy a e36 318i in the near future and was wondering if any one had any experience with a 6-speed from say a e39 or a e46 in the 1.8 liter 318 engines because i would think that tranny would be pretty worn after 10-14 years. Is it even possible? Would it be a waste of time+ money? Thank you in advance

well, first i would recommend spending the money to get at least a 325 if not a 328(lots more torque with the 2.8l)

i don't know about any 6speeds for e36's, call me a n00b, but i'm sure they are out there, and not cheap either. if you really really want a 6 speed then its no use in getting a 325 or 328, get yourself a bonafied M3.

getting a 6speed is just so much money i would believe, not worth it on a 318, just my opinion

But as gas goes up so does my liking of the 318 gas mileage. ok so ive decided i wll stay with the stock 5 speed and not mess with the 6 sped. after test driving one I wouldnt mess with turbo or sc, probly just chip intake and exhaust. What type of chip intake and exhaust would you guys reccomed. I have heard of eissman exhuast but that seems a little proicey and same with the evo 2 intake.

The M42 motor is pretty bullet proof. I had a 91 318is with a Conforti chip in it and it preformed great, I would recommend the JC chip. I like the Supersprint exhaust, but they are all about the same as far a performance goes.
