Problems:

1.) High engine RPM for driving speed
2.) Noticeable power lose
3.) Rough idle
4.) Louder than normal exhaust

I replaced the O2 sensor recently b/c I noticed some of these symptoms, I also got a 1221 flash code from the OBD. The problems ceased for a couple days then slowly started again. I rechecked the O2 sensor for any damage but found none and the diagnostic shows nothing (1444). I will be replacing the fuel filter tonight but am I on the right track? Could it be the fuel pump?

I believe others on this forum are having similar problems with noticeable power lose. Someone please help all of us and our handicapped Bimmers.

Thanks

Airlordz,

Sorry this reply is so late, just getting your message.

I think I have solved the problem. I replaced the fuel filter the other day and it didn't seem to do anything. I read elsewhere on this board that, when it comes to spark plugs more $$$ doesn't always mean better performance (see “Spark Plug Recommendations”). I had recently put brand new Bosch 4+ Platinum plugs in my engine (almost $10 each). Shortly after all my problems began.

Apparently these plugs run to hot and can decrease performance. I picked up some Champion Platinums, which require gapping unlike the 4+. Within a day or two, my computer adjusted itself to the modification and the car now runs great. To think I almost bought a new fuel pump.

To answer your question, we should get together one day and compare our rides. Were in Calgary do you live, North..South?

Hi willis,
I leave in the south (downtown) actually eau claire so i can go in either direction. I think i should change my plugs too. What are the specs for your champions and how much were they.

The last time I had the car in for some basic checks the mechanic changed the plugs to the 4+, I told him that I read they run too hot but he said "Not for this car". I guess he was wrong, I'll see what happens and if something goes wrong I'll tell him. BTW how long have you had the plugs for before they started screwing with the computer?

About a month after I installed them I stated having problems. After switching them out with some Champion Platinums (RC10PYP4), the car ran perfect. I guess they work b/c they are more like OEM plugs then the others. Too bad they didn't work for me. I have heard some really good things about them in other cars, as well as some bad.
