I have a 1993 525 only 60k miles... Car runs great except now it's got a quirk I
can't (nor the mechanics) figure out..... It stalls out (sporatically- no frequency
or repetition to identify)..... It stalls while running- as if gas or basic power
just disconnects)...First mechanic said it was Idle Valve... Charged me $500 then
gave me my money back...... Second mechanic said it was oil gasget leaking
onto spark plugs..... He too charged hundreds..... But just tonight it happened
again...... While driving juice just died...... I left the car a few hours and then
started it up again and drove it home..... But I know now the event will
happen again....... Any ideas what's going on...... I doubt it's any obvious
ones- I do believe the mechanics too- good ones - are stumped...

Most likely this is caused by a defective ignition coil. Trying to troubleshoot which of the 6 may be tough given the sporadic nature of the problem. A shorted coil can 'pull' the key on voltage low to a point that the DME module shuts off (just as turning the ignition off). The failure can be just momentary which is why it restarts fine.

Check your fast idle sensor.....if this sensor is operateing sparatically this will cause the engine to run rough or stall ....did your car idle high when this happened? then when you stepped on the gas: that is when it stalled? if so start there! It is hard for a mechanic to diagnose this because it has to malfunction when he/she is looking at it! It is usually located along with temp guage sensor near the thermostat... pretty sure it is the blue sensor!

If a car stalls, chances are highly likely that it comes from either electricity problem or fuel problem. Ignition coil along with spark plugs and the fuel pump can be the two most important items to be scrutinized!
