This race happened a while back, but since i just joined i thought i would post it for everyone's information. I was driving our 98 beater SHO with over 115k miles on it, but which recently had a newer motor installed because of cam guide failure on the old one. It is stock except for 2 $30 generic mufflers i had the local muffler shop put on. My buddy was driving his 92 325i 5speed that had an M3 muffler, intake, and chip. He insisted that it would go 160 with the chip, i was just like "whatever man". Anyway we were leaving another buddies house when he asked if wanted to race. I was like "i don't care, sure". So we lined up and i did the three honks. Right off the bat he jumped like 1 carlength ahead, but then i started reeling him in pretty quickly and by 100 or so i was at least 1 and 1/2 carlengths ahead and i shut her down. SHOs got some decent topend is all he said after the race.

i miss read. i thought you said '89 not '98. i confirmed with a fellow sho driver that what you said is not out of the ordinary. the 3.4l V8 puts out 240bhp, and seeing as though SHO's are wrong wheel drive (fwd), with that kind of power it is more of a 0-100 car than a 0-60.

you'd be suprised how well the V8 SHOs handle and brake compared to the previous generation, they made significant improvements
I am the sho driver Dan is referring to.

Gen 3 SHOs are not bad cars. They're quick and fairly nimble. Many Gen 2 owners and Gen 1 owners upgrade to the Gen 3 brakes for increased stopping power (11.6 inch rotors vs 10.6). Being a Gen 2 owner I can't say the performance of the 3.4L V8 isn't bad, but to be honest ford paired the automatic SHOs with terrible transmissions. Against a Gen 1 or 2 manual transmission SHO a Gen 3 would lose.

The reason? The autos in SHOs lost a significant amount of power to the wheels (for obvious reasons). Getting back on tpoic I would say that it would be a close match, and by close I mean neck and neck.

I am schooled in the 3.0 and the 3.2 SHo engines, and not the 3.4. What I know from the V6s (3.0 and 3.2s) is that the cars are really only for high speed racing. The cars are not intended for a 0-60 run. For instance a SHO is in first all the way and second only paritally for a 60 run. The SHO's engine is unique in the fact that it has secondary intake runners that activate at 4,000RPM, effectivley letting double the air into the engine. The SHO makes gobs of power up around 4-7,000 RPM (peak is at 6800 I believe), therefore you're 0-60 times won't be very decent.

(edit: added these 1/4th mile times)

As for agility, SHOs are pretty well handling cars. That said I bet any BMW (stock) could take any SHO in the corners, but theres a good market for handling products for SHOs so an upgraded one would probably be on par or near a stock BMW 328.

Thats all I have for now [;)]

no offense, but your 13.9 in a gen 1 is completely ludicris. my buddy has owned a gen 1, and 2 gen 2s one auto and a manual and none of those were even 14sec cars let alone 13.9. In fact the gen 2s were faster than the gen 1, and my gen 3 will run neck and neck the gen 2 manual. these cars are luck to do mid 15s at a track. i also consider my buddy and I to be pretty good drivers.

BMW nut: Well back it up then! Go ahead and slander someone trying to make good informative posts. You're the reason good people go off messageboards. Get some facts to back it up with or STFU.

Sorry, those times are for modified SHOs. Sorry for the misconception. I SERIOUSLY doubt your Gen 3 can run with a Gen 1 or 2 manual SHO though.

Do you have any proof Gen 1s are slower than Gen 2s? By all logic; Gen 1s are lighter proof , and both cars use essentially the same drivetrain so how is a Gen 2 faster?

I'll try to get some STOCK 1/4th mile times.
