Okay, this may be a fairly stupid question. There's a switch next to the gear shift in my 318ti, which has an "A" and an "M" on it. My instinct is that they stand for "Automatic" and "Manual", but I can't seem to find anyone who can verify it. I'm apparently too retarded to figure it out for myself.

I know how most "clutchless manual" systems (tiptronic, etc.) work, but I can't figure out how this does, or even if that's what it's for.

A friend told me that there's an "M" button in the new M Series cars, that gives it more power, but I tried pushing it, and it had the opposite effect.

Could someone help out a poor retard who's just bought his first BMW?

Hi dog13ert,
the manual for my 328ic confirms your instinct -- the buttons are for Automatic program and Manual program. However, it's not Steptronic. All the M does is hold it in gear #3 right from startoff ... useful when starting on icy surface.
