I am being VERY lazy here.
Rather than pulling my trunk panels apart on a cold day to look at battery (right side as I look in?) I'm asking here.
On the Miata in an enclosed trunk Mazda uses a Gel battery for safety-no maintenance for lazy guys. Same in BMW? I should pull all apart to check terminals I guess.
Any thoughts?

Stock BMWs do not normally have a gel battery. The battery is located in the trunk on the right side. All you have to do is pull on the little black handle and the battery is right there. You can replace the OEM battery with a dry cell battery that does not need to be vented.

I got lucky with my 91 318is and the original battery lasted 11 years! I am sure that is some kind of record. I could not find an Optmia or any gel battery that had the right post configuration or the was the correct size to fit in the battery box. Same problem with my M roadster. Either the posts were not in the correct positions or the shape was wrong. I replaced both with Delcos.
