The Valentine One is considered to be the best by many, but it is expensive. I got mine a few weeks ago and like it very much. The Passport 8500 is also supposed to be good.

You are thinking of the G-Tech Pro and Competition. Passport just came out with a similar device. They seem like they could be fun to play with, and perhaps give you a relatively imprecise measure of the difference between modifications, but more of a toy than anything else.

The best Radar Detector is go the speed limit. I had Wistler for about a year till it got stolen along with my radio. It was shit. Everytime i go downtown or just passing across remote doors, the thing start going crazy.

The radar detector is just part of the battle against five oh. You must learn how you radar detector (RD) works and become familiar with its behavior. There are many factors that come in to play in avoiding tickets.
First, smart driving is the most important, by keeping right except to pass is very important. You are much more likely to get pulled over in the left lane than the right. make smooth transitions through lanes, use turn signals, and don't tailgate.
second, during highway driving pay close attn. to your detector. if you get a stray beep, it could mean that there is a cop ahead that hit another car up to a mile away using pulse mode on his laser gun. he has the ability to pull a trigger and zap you before your detector can even pick it up. your toast. Pay close attn to stray radar detections.
third, find someone to trail behind...let him get hit befor you.
fourth, become familiar with false detections in some areas (alarms, auto doors, etc)

I have been fortunat so far, and a radar detector can pay for itself if it saves you once. BUT LEARN HOW TO USE IT!!![thumb]

They had a radar test for a magazine a few months ago and the passpor actually beat the V1 in most aspects. But i have heard good things about both. I personally have a Whistler 3300 and love it. It has worked great for me and saved my butt a number of times. My girlfriend also uses the whistler in her 2001 sierra and as well it has saved her many times so our radar dectectors have paid for themselves. I have used the ones that get mounted on the windshield and they dont seem to be the most accurate. Sometimes they dont even pick anything till it is to late. But all it takes is getting to know the dectector. i dont even need to see the display on mine. By the noise i can tell what band it is and because i have used it for about 2 yrs now i know were and when the false alarms will be ( i.e. the airport , the automatic doors). I know the whistler goes for about 300. if you do some research you can prob get one for about 160 which is what we paid for my girls. But you can not just rely on the dectector. You have to be heads up and actually scan the road for the cops. remember the radar only pics them up if they are using radar. Mine actually pics up all emergency signals and has a voice that lets me know what is approaching or what i am approaching. it also picks up the slight signal that the cops radar produces when they have the instant on on. most that i have seen dont. just thought i would put that in. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. my next toy will actually be a Uniden BCT-7 police scanner for the glove. kinda nice to have. But i dont know if it is legal in other states so you had better check if You are interested. Here is a link to it :

V1 is nice.. but I think overated and overpriced.... I personally would go with the Passport.. my friend has one.. very nice..

They're both quality units... but the V1 isn't worth the extra $100 just for some blinking arrows.. and in my friends car.. his V1 has soooo many false alarms.. that's one reason the passport won in the test that the above post talks about.. v1 had too many false alarms compared to the passport..

There are numerous comparison tests that go either way.

I have no personal experience with the Passport, but I've been using the V1 for the last few weeks and learning its ways.

Most of the police I encounter are using constant K-band radar. I pick them up a mile away or longer. It is pretty ridiculous how much warning I get.

I have come across laser (twice) and Ka instant-on (several times). In each case I had warning from the hit on the car(s) ahead of me, often a good 1/4-1/2 mile in front or longer.

I like the arrows very much. It helps to know where the signal is coming from.

It does pick up a lot of security doors and whatnot, primarily on the X band. There are various logic modes and a mute volume you can set, so it hasn't bothered me much.

I think I made the right choice. YMMV. [:D]

In any event, it hasn't changed my driving style that much. I average about 5 mph more than I used to on the Freeway, but thats about it. I just feel better when I do go fast, as I have more to rely on than just my 'active visual scan'.

People can write as many reviews as they would like. If there is that much of a question in your head, they both have a 30 day 100% satisfaction money back guarentee. Pick them both up and decide which one you like better. Thats what I did and the V1 was 100 times the machine as the Escort. But that is just my oppinion. With multiple antennaes, a bogie counter and the direction arrows, you cant beat it

I have the Escort Passport and love it. I read about 2000 review sites before I decided on one. What did it for me, was that I noticed that the Passport was ranked either #1 or #2 in every category on every site. Where as the Valentine wasn't even mentioned in some sites and place very low on others...
