I have been told by a european auto mechanic that I should not use just any synthetic oil. They tell me to use high performance BMW german oil. Is this better? Which is the best? I have been told by a guy I know that drives a 99' M3 that Mobil makes the best synthetic oil for european engines. Also, why the hell would anyone charge over $100 for an oil change, like all the european mechanics I found charge. Doesn't the oil cost only a few dollars more per quart?

I use Mobil 1, BMW shops use Castrol. Either one is perfectly acceptable. Synthetic oil will run between $4 and $10.00 per quart depending on what you use and where you get it. Use Mahle or Mann filters.

Synthetic oils are good for any engine. The problem arises when you make a change from petrol oil to a Synthetic one.

The petrol oil makes a "memory carbon mark" in the engine, unless you continue using the same oil you won't have problems. Synthetic oils are very detergent. Ten years ago I lost my e30 323i engine due to that change. It [offtopic] was plenty of power and smoke.

A kiss from a BMW lover in Colombia.

Dont think it will affect this guy's 98 though like it did your E30 Gus. Since fritchy is down in Florida Mobile1 0W40 or 15W50 would do alright.

yeah when I changed my oil I went to get 5 litres of Mobil 1 only to find that it would cost me $75... So I had to get the lower grade synthetic for $40. I wasn't happy.

Is that for Mobil 1 Eric? Heck I will race to target now!
Yeah. Good LUCK!I ent there, sold out. I met one guy at a meet last week that bought about 25 qt's and rainchecked another 32 qt's. They wouldnt even let me raincheck 15 quarts. So I got none. Every target is like sold out. Also note the synthetic that is on sale in only the Mobil 1 15W-50.

They have it at the Target in Kent, however it was over $5 qt. They said that they have no knowledge of the sale and it could be a regional thing but not here in Washington! I guess I have to stick to the 3.99 @ qt. at Costco.

Synthetic Oil

I currently have a 1993 318is, switched to Mobil 1 10W40 at 87,000 miles, (just after buying car from an owner who never kept records). Now have 103,800 miles on car, gained nearly 2 MPG on the highway!. Also run Mobil 1 in 3/4 Ton late model Suburban Towing a 9,200 lb trailer. Avg. about $5.00 qt for oil, only use Mann Filters in BMW. I have not experienced any of the organic-to-synthetic problems that other people have had. Ran Mobil 1 in my previous BMW, 1977 320i, car had about 285,000 miles on the original engine, ran a compression test for the new owner and all cylinders were within 10% of each other. I am a believer. Many new cars come from the factory filled with Mobil 1 - I believe the Corvette and Viper both are factory filled. No matter what you use, just conduct regular maintenance, keep some type of material history card and have fun.

I did not "bash" anyone, I simply said that his mechanic is wrong, I do not see that as bashing. He needs to find a new mechanic.

The mechanic i use works for a bmw dealership here but as hes a m8 he does some work with mine on the side, so he knows what hes on about, but i was just repeating what i was told by a proffesional, and ive never had any issues with my car after hes done any work.

0-40 vs. 10-40!

I bought some Mobile-1 (0-40) from WallMart the other day ($5.28/qrt), and the engine seem to be running smoother than before - I always used Mobile-1 20-50.

Does any one know what is the difference between, for instance, a 10-40 and a 0-40?

-A
