anybody have a bike rack for their e36? my gf is looking at a 325is, but only if she can throw a bike rack on top. trying to figure out who has them and what they think. 'round the web it looks like the only thing available is the Thule, which looks nice. also i saw mention of an OEM rack being available, but short of calling a dealership i haven't found anything yet.

thanks in advance.

Dan, she'll be happy with the Thule rack. Not sure if its the same on the E36, but on the E46 they have special racks that hook directly into where the OEM racks would go.

I would also suggest getting the 599xtr Big Mouth Upright bike mount with lock. This allows you to put the bike on top without taking off the front tires which could be a pain at times.

I have a Thule on my E36. It's great as long as you're carefull lifting the bike on and off. Under the rubber door seals there are mounting points that the Thule coneects to. I think I had also found that Yakima makes one too.

Try "Sportrack" I used them on my old 325e's... they lock on, don't over hang the side of the car, and it comes as a roof rack to begin with, and you can mount a bike rack to it in the summer, and in the winter, you slide the bike rack off, and slide the ski rack on. (you can get kayak mounts too)... Sportrack 1(800)561-0716 or http://www.sportrack.com/home

or more specifically, this is the one that will fit your car: http://www.sportrack.com/a0230 (Model #: A0230) ... the Sportrack Mondial system.

hey,

I have a thule I just bought for about 160 from Bavarian Motorsports for my e36. I just hooked up a top mounted thule bike carrier to it. I mainly bought that rack for my Kayak though. HOwever, I used to have a hitch receiver mounted under my rear bumper that I had a rear rack mounted to. That thing rocked. MUCH easier to load and unload, bike was lower, no jacking around with stuff on the roof, etc. Check around and see what they have. For my e36, its 240.00 for the hitch + you need a bike rack ( I already have one ), if she has the $ and is going to keep the car for a while, the rear rack for bike is the only way to fly, only bummer is it is not a verstil as a top mounted rack where you can buy different accessories for kayaking, roof storage, etc...

cheers!

Brad
