Yup - you have many options - to fit any budget. One that looks real cool is the Alpine system with in-dash flip monitor - Alpine PowerNav NVE-N852A and monitor is separate. Total system price about 1700$ new. Fits nicely in E36.

Another way is to get stand-alone GPS receiver with good screen, such as Garmin StreetPilot III. Depending on the model and age, you can have one for 150$ - 750$. Virtually no installation skills required, plus portability. See pic below.

Third, a very simple windshield-mount GPS receiver plus a laptop would do the trick. I prefer this setup, and use a small Fujitsu tablet pc with a 10" TFT screen, which doesn't occupy much space and is easy to read at daytime. System cost: $40 GPS receiver + $260 tablet pc = $300. Software extra 20$ or so. You can make it a very neat setup (no wires hanging, etc) if you spend extra time - well worth it. Big plus here - laptop plays MP3s, keeps your contact/schedule info and can be fitted with a WiFi card.
