Check Enginer Light

Before I purchased a 98 M3 I was driving it realitively hard to get a feel for it and the check engine light came on. I realize this is related to the emissions of the vehicle and does not need to be serviced right away but just soon. Luckily, I had my inspection done the next day and they told me it had to do with the gas tank. I did not have time for the full diagnostic, but they were able to reset the sensor for me. A couple days ago the sensor came back on. Is this a common occurence, or is it a bad sign for something to come. Any info is appreciated.

If it had to do with the gas tank it could be a bad gas cap. If you have a faulty cap the light could come on. Have your gas cap tested or just replace it.

correct, check the gas cap, also what i experienced on the e36, the expansion tank for the evap system, there is a hose that goes to the tank cracks a cause a leak. location is in the right rear tire well.
