The Bently book says you need to disconnect the axle from the rear to lower the rear suspention enough to change the springs. My friend is going to lend me a spring compressor. I am hoping if I compress the spring I won't need to take the axle out. Anybody done this????

The issue with this is that you don't want to put too much pressure on the CV joint basket in the driveshaft. Using a compressor you will be just fine. In fact, if you are careful, you should be able to get the rear springs out without one, just don't push too much on the control arm for the reason I mentioned.
