That answer is not as simple as you would like

The answer is YES and NO

Vanos was introduced in the 99 (I believe) model year line, so if you are inquiring about a 99 540.. then yes if about a 97/98 then ... NO

What about a '95 325i? I heard that the vanos units don't live far past 100k miles, so, should I be worried or not (96k miles)?

No problems so far on my '94 325i M50 single-vanos, at 141k and climbing. Your '95 is double-vanos, but I haven't heard of any particular problems with either system.

As for the 540, perhaps Marinakorp was talking about the E39 Fiver only, or maybe was referring to a certain evolution in the vanos line, like steplessly variable (although I think that didn't come until later, perhaps not until the E46 M3).

I am talking about the e39 4.4 liter V8 540i engine
So does any one know for sure if this 540i engine uses vanos (model year 97-or 98)?

BTW, thanks for the informative link on how the vanos systems works.

brahtw8 - has it right ... I was referring to the e39 540

The orig post was asking about the 540i ... which in retrospect could also be the e34 540 / M540 or the 540 sport using the 4.0 block... not sure if they had the vanos or not

Taking that into consideration, the vanos was introduced in 99 for this particular line (4.4 liter v8)

so... YES and NO the 540 uses the vanos system
