Came on today, I was like, what the hell, another car with a check engine light. Just got an oil change a few days ago and filled up with gas yesterday. Tried starting the car a few times, still would not go off, solid check engine light. Was thinking o2 sensors, not cheap as if I recall, the E36 has 4 of them, than decided to check gas cap, removed it, made sure it was tight, than checked oil cap, removed and made sure it was secure. Light cleared. Hopefully was a loose gas or oil cap. Has never happened before. With the OBDII, don't think the gas pedal code was going to help my 97. Seems like the problem is fixed so far, was 29 degrees this morning. Car started fine, good idle, no probs in performance, with 70K on the ODO, getting to the area of replacing the o2 sensors though. Posted this to help out the search function as some data that might help someone. Will keep you all updated if it comes on again. Seems like a loose gas cap might have been the fix....or loose oil cap after the oil change. Sometimes with a loose gas cap, can take a number of starts to clear the code after it is tightened. Guess this was the one time a code scanner might have helped me out......even though I reset the oil and service settings myself last night.
