Maybe someone here can shed some light on this.

The other day I started my 1992 318i, ready to go to work. I turned on the wipers to get some frost off the windshield, and there was strange sound coming from underneath the driver's side wiper. It basically sounds like someone knocking on the dashboard, and it seems to start up and stay right after I use the wipers. It goes off once I turn off the car, but comes back once I turn on the wipers.

The wipers still work, but the right hand wiper seems to be twiching a little bit when not in use.

Thanks,
Andrzej

hmmmmmmm............can't say I have heard of that. Maybe one of the bearings in the wiper motor is ganna go soon. Remove the black tray that covers the the bottome of the windsheild and see if you can see if anything is wrapped around the motor pins or look at them while they are on for a visual inspection. Thats all I can think of. I am not 100% sure that you have to remove that tray to look at the wiper motor, maybe just inside the engine compartment

I took a look at it last night - it seems like the wiper motor is running in some capacity even though the wipers are turned off. That's what's making the right wiper twich.

I have a repair manual but the layout of the wiper mechanism in their diagrams is quite different in my car. All the wiper mechanics seem to be located pretty deep under the windshield and from what i can tell, the best way to get at it is to go in from the dashboard (?). You can sort of see it from under the hood, but can't access it.

Anyways, I took out the fuse to keep the motor from burning out, and I'll have my mechanic take a look at it sometime in the next couple of days. Just hope it doesn't rain till then :)
