fading interior light

Hey,
In my 94 325i when I locked the car the light faded out... my 92 325i doesnt do that.. Which part is responsible for that?

It is a thermostat. The 92 might not have it.

I thought thermostats were used for other purposes switch on off my fridge. Thermostat -> 2 types of metal that expand contract differently in different temperature.. is there any other definition that I dont know of?
