Hey all I found this, maybe you may need it.

The HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning System) of the 1996 E36 has
a feature allowing different sensor values to be displayed on the control panel.

To Access the Display Function:
Press the "AUTO" and "REAR DEFROST" buttons simultaneously.
12 displays are available.
Toggle through them by pressing the fan rocker (+ or -) switch.

Number

1
Interior Temp Sensor

2
Exterior Temp Sensor

3

4

5

7

8

To Exit the Display Function:
Press the "RECIRC" and "AUTO" buttons simultaneously, or

2. All Temperature displays are in °C (Centigrade).
3. Negative values are indicated with minus sign

Didn't work for me either.

I have a hypothesis: My owners manual has updated versions of pages 43-46, which describe the automatic climate control, stuck into it. This is what my car has, except the unit described in the manual has an automatic recirculated air mode (there are two LEDs and two symbols on the recirculated air button, one of them with an 'A' inside). The unit in my car does not have this feature (the button only has one LED and one symbol, no 'A'). Perhaps these hidden functions apply only to the unit with automatic recirculated air?

My car has a production date of1996/02. Anybody know when they started installing the units with automatic recirculated air?

Georges & frolf, do your cars have the automatic recirculated air function? And what is the production date of your car?

Production date is 11/1997.
AS far as i know that they started installing these units since 1995

Actually, all of our cars come from Germany [;)], but I know what you mean.

I don't really know any more than you do (and probably less), but I suspect it has more to do with the production date than the market the car was built for. frolf and I both have older cars; my guess is that this is something introduced with the newer A/C unit (with auto recirculate).

Well sorry for the late reply, you may be right on what you said, but they told me that even old produced ones have these features. You have to push the buttons at the same time.

in the attached pics you can see function 6 showing the engine speed(rpm = 650).
