Ok so whenever I turn my steering wheel I hear these horrible springy sounds coming from the steering column. I hear it all the time. It sounds like a spring twisting and clicking. What in gods name could this be?? I am 100% sure it is not coming from outside of the car. I know that it is inside the car, and i can feel it too. Whenever it makes the little clicking sounds i can feel the clicks on the wheel. They are very slight though. Any idea's?? This is driving me crazy!! I know that my power-steering pump is a little on the fritz as it whines whenever i turn the wheel far left or far right. Could this for some reason have something to do with it? There is no hesitation or extra pressure while turning the wheel it feels normal except for the damn clicking. I know this isn't normal. Any help would gladly be appr. Thanks guys

Pat

this sound when you turn the wheel far left and right is normal. i have that too.

for the sound you always hear i guess it is a metallic rubbing of some sort. could be for example the release thingy for the turn signals or may be the steering lock that is not that good anymore. anyway not a good thing but not that critical either.

Your ball joints might be bad too and the clicking noise is transfered thru the column. When you turn your wheels lock to lock the steering usually makes noise, try to avoid doing this. This is not very good for the steering. Many people do this but you realy shouldn't turn the wheels all the way.[:)]

well actually i think what the spring sounding squeak is from the sping from the Airbag spring, but it is caused by the 'column lock'. i am not sure what must be done, but i think it is rather extensive procedure.

I have a 97 328is and it was makingt the same sound. I read on here somewhere that it was a spacer or washer that needed a shot of lube. So I went to the local auto parts store and bought some stuff called lock-ease. It is a liquid like WD-40 with graphite in it in a small spray can. I sprayed this around the steering wheel where it meets the column 3 weeks ago and still no sound[:D] Hope this helps. PS Make sure and use a rag to keep from spraying lube everywhere!
