I look at the post concerning this and the "posters" don't answer my questions, and there are no replies.
Any idea what thes guys hear? What should I listen for? Should I be on crack too?

Stand infront of the motor. the tensioner is at the front of the block to the left where the timing chain
meets up with the camshaft. Some people hear a noise and automatically think its the tensioner when almost
the same sound can come from the tappets.
Ive heard that the tensioner in a 95 325i is plastic and over a period of time without running the tensioner
will dry out, causing it to become a problem.

I have a 91 318is and upon startup it makes a noise similar to tappets, however as the engine warms up the noise goes away. I was told by BMW and others that this is normal and is the timing chain system. The car has made this noise since it was new. I was also told that if the noise fails to go away after warmup you need a timing chain, tensioner, and/or timing chain rails. If I had to replace any I would repalce all.
