As far as I know, you don't. They are sealed and if you break the seal, you just have to factory seal it somehow, otherwise it fogs up. But thats what I heard, so ...
My friend's E36 foged up real bad. He opened it and cleaned it. It now looks clean as ever. I know that you can do it. Besides, he did it about 3 months ago and it still looks good.

Hmm, interesting, you sure he has factory headlights and not HIDs or anything, because I think you can do that with the european headlights but not with american, I guess I am mistaken.
