Illuminated M3 shift knob for E46

I've ordered the illuminated M3 shift knob for my e46. My question for those who have done this mod is, did you guys provide the +12 V that comes on when the key is inserted, or did you tap into the +12 V that dims with the rest of the interior dash-area lighting? Since, I usually keep my dimmer switch set to minimum, I was wondering if it would be better to just keep the knob at max light intensity while my dash is at the minimum intensity.

well i googled it.. linky they used the little ashtray light to illuminate the the knob, which sounded really smart when i read it, instead of looking for a wire to tap into..

i thought about doing that.. but i'd now rather drop the money into getting a dde and ipod link..
