there are 2 inspection intervals. if you are unclear on which interval was carried out last then you should get inspection II done because it includes everything from inspection I.

inspection I:
change oil and filter
check trans fluid level (auto)
check engine components and hoses for leaks
check the drive belts
check the steering and suspension
check brake pad thickness (front and rear)
check brake hoses and lines
check and lubricate the throttle linkage
check parking brake
check exhaust and mountings
check seat belts
lubricate all locks and hinges
replace pollen filter
check headlight beam alignment
check windshield washer system
check engine management system
road test the vehicle
check wiper blades
reset service indicator

inspection II:
replace spark plugs
replace air filter
replace tranny fluid (auto)
replace diff. oil
check driveaxel boot condition
check parking brake shoes
reset service indicator

addition work to be carried out every second inspection II:
change manual tranny oil
replace the fuel filter
check the clutch

If the dealer did everything, you can reset the light easily with no or little cost. When I got the car, I took it to the mechanic who checked everything I could think about, replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs and changed the oil. I didn't want the light to be there so I reset it myself. This is a pretty good DIY write up on resetting the oil and service lights. http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/electrical/e36_reset_service_lights.html You don't need to make that thing the guy uses, a regular wire will work just fine, at least that's what I used.

It depends on what e36 it is. The 325i you and I have, has one. It's right in the middle of the whole car, where the two exhaust pipes come together just for the sensor and then split again. I tried changing mine by myself but there isn't enough space. I got tired of it and went to a mechanic. The guy couldn't get to the sensor even with the special tool, he had to disconnect the exhaust from the headers to get to the sensor. Good thing I didn't bother getting the special tool.
