I am looking to buy a 2001 to 2003 530i or 540i. First what are the major difference between the 530 and 540? Also what can I expect regarding longevity, maintainence, major reparis etc. This will be my first BWM so I really do not know much and have no history. Although I have always loved the style of the cars and have heard of there great reliability. I have a friend who has a 7 series and I have not asked him too many questions, I also do not know how those compare to a 5 series.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Bimmer magazine, August 2005 edition, there is an entire article on the E39 5 series from 1997-2003. Lists the common maladies associated with the cars and discusses all of the different engines.
I have a 2002 530i and love it. Great power, comfortable, handles well. Have had no problems other that the moon roof stopped working this summet (will fix it on my next oil change). The 540 has a bigger engine and more power (540 4.4L V8 282bhp, 530 3.0L inline 6 225bhp). Many of the features that were options in the 525 and 530 are standard in the 540.
You won't go wrong with either choice. Just buy one that's been taken care of very well.
