why do some e36 m3s have the tri-color "stripes" on the seats while others don't? was is like a factory option?

The ones that dont have the stripes most likely have what is called a "Luxury Package" I dont really know all the details of what it included with that package, but I do know there is woodgrain dash trim and the seats are shaped a little different and are a little softer I think.. I have owned 2 M3's one with it and one witout it.. I like them either way. Hope this helps!

I have an uncle that has an e36 M3 luxury (he took Euro delivery of it), and I could have sworn it had the stripes on the seats. I could be wrong, but I swear I remember seeing them when he picked the car up and thought, "Wow, that's pretty cool."

i have the full luxury package with stripes on all my seats...its a 98 4 dr m3

my 1998 4 door sedan M3 is a luxury edition M3 as well and it has the stripes on all the seats as well.
