hey, my name's daniel and i've posted here once before... i'm not too familiar with german car tuning because i've been driving asian cars since i started... i currently own a 2000 celica gt-s and i'm familiar with manufacturers such as hks, apexi, injen, aem, blitz, and etc etc... i'm looking at the 98 328is and i like it a lot... Right now i'm looking into the 02 WRX, 04 VW GTi 1.8T, and also the 98 328is... i'm clueless as to what a basic set up would include on a bmw... Exhaust, Headers, and Intake? what brands are good for bmw's? what manufacturers should i look into, i've done some searches and i find things im just not sure if they're any good... can anyone please help me out and maybe list a couple of good brand names that make performance parts and also some show parts, that way i got something to look into and research a little... also what is the deal with 328is and Chips? i've never dealt with chips but i know that the GTi 1.8T has the apr chips or the GIAC chips which are very impressive for a good price... anybody know about any chips for the (E36) 328is? any help is greatly appreciated.. also any known problems with the 328is? is the maintanance a bitch to deal with? very expensive to fix? thanks in advance

Thanks
Dan

Hello crazyd. I have a 1997 328is and love it. As far as mods I have used UUC Motorwerks (www.uucmotorwerks.com) and Active Autowerke (www.activeautowerke.com). Both of these are aftermarket tuners for BMWs that have a substantial amount of performance parts and have great reputations. From either of these companies you can buy good intake kits and exhausts. As far as chips I have not yet installed one on my car but plan to go with the shark injector from Jim Conforti, like vance said, which you can buy through UUC. As far as headers I can't really give you any advice because I haven't looked into it and don't really plan on installing them. Another good site for 328is performance is www.eurospeedperformance.com. They currently have a project 328is in which they have switched out the intake manifold with another and have installed some active autowerke software with it. It seems to have given substantial gains which amount to just about M3 horsepower and you can buy the exact kit from them. Basically, I would just check out these two sites and see what you think of the parts. They pretty much have all the basic performance parts to offer, like lightweight flywheels, short shift kits, exhausts, intakes, underdrive pullies, etc. So far on my car I have done an active autowerke exhaust and short shift kit, a jim conforti intake (which you can get at UUC), and a bunch of other little mods that UUC offers. I very satisfied with all of the parts. Good luck on search. I would definitely go with buying the 1998 328is, as long as it is a 5 speed. Oh and about repairs, I have not had many other cars, but would say that I don't thinking repairing my car costs much more or maybe the same as most other cars.
