I bought my BMW in April with 180k miles, I knew I'd have repairs to deal with (which is why I married my VW mechanic LOL). The moonroof seems to be something neither he nor his mechanic buddies want to touch, "Take it to the dealer".

Does anyone know the reason these things jam, and how common a problem it is? Of course it's going to be expensive to fix at the dealer, but if it is a common thing, it ought to be well recognized right? Nothing new in this area, not a mystery, I shouldn't expect to pay hours and hours for diagnostics right?

It's a beautiful summer in WA this year, with the huge dual sliding moonroof, I'd sure like to be able to open it.

I'd appreciate any advice anyone has if they've had the same problem. At first only the back would pop up like it was going to open, and then the whole thing stopped entirely. The motor sounds like it's trying but absolutely nothing happens.

Thanks,
Susan

Well, you should let him know the older bmw's are much easier to work on than nearly every VW i've ever delt with. Do the windows still work? If so, does the sunroof make any noises when you push the button? My guess is a bad relay underneith the back seat.
