Hi All, need some advise on this one. This is a continuation to a previous thread “manual trans failure” posted on 7/25/06. The dealer has had my car for 2 weeks and has misdiagnosed the problem repeatedly. After they replaced my transmission they call and said the car was ready to be picked up. When I got there I noticed the “missing and clanging” was still present but less noticeable at idle and mild revving. Waited for 4 hours so they could replace 2 injectors. After replacing the injectors the 2 cylinders in question were still missing. The service advisor told me then that they would have to do a compression test the next day. He also stated that they may have to remove the head and if a valve was bent then I would have to pay for the repair. He also asked if I had missed a shift or had been over revving the engine. Assured him I was not and asked if they could check the event log to confirm. He claimed they can not read it and would need to send it out.
Bottom line is they claim I have 2 dead cylinders and would need a BMW representative to come out and take a look. That was yesterday and now today the say the BMW rep stated I need a new clutch and flywheel. Could a bad clutch and flywheel cause the 2 cylinders to miss? The service advisor claimed that this was so due to back pressure created by the problem. I don’t see the connection and have lost faith in the service department to diagnose the problem. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated. My car is a 2003 330i (ZHP) with 85,000 miles.

I had a simular problem but my cylinders didn't go out. At 150,000 without warning my clutch gave up the ghost, I was on business travel in Hawaii and my wife had my bimmer so i called my bimmer dude and had it towed in to replace the clutch and as soon as the clutch was repaired at a cost of $2400.00 my tranmission followed. I thought they should of diagnosed the tranny and replaced it at the same time they were under the vehicle replacing the clutch but bimmer service centers some times miss it. Needless to say I had my transmission serviced at a totally different bimmer service center. I can't say I ever heard of a blown clutch causing the cylinders to self-distruct, missing is one thing however back pressure causing this type of damage is a whole differnet problem. Just my story as well as my two and a half cents worth, so is BMW going to pay for this or will it have to come out of pocket? Happy Motoring...
