Hi all... K I’m new to the area of owning a BMW. I have been with Volvos a lot but just got myself a new 328i 96 about 4 weeks ago. Now I have a problem. The engine misfires at weird times.... mostly when just starting out in the morning when its cold.. I do not know if that’s totally the case since I have yet to try it in warm weather. What’s the cause? I have taken it in to a repair shop and have had the codes read out and all he says is that its just saying Cil. 6 missfire. That’s all... [confused]

What could be the cause? And I thought there was a computer system in the compartment to help the tech better pin point the problem? This repair shop just told me "well it could be a number of things, were just going to have to do the trial and error thing" What?! He just told me the tune up starts at $500 and that’s just to see if it changes anything... Isent there a better way to go about this? Yes I fully understood that it was going to be more expensive to repair but they also said easier to pin point the problem so you don’t waste money.... K any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

It's probably a bad coil. Do a search on the board here in the E36 section and in the E46 section, and you'll learn a lot about this common issue.

Welcome to the board and the world of BMW!

Well if it says coil 6 is misfiring, and you are having a misfiring condition. Using my theory of troubleshooting and engine dynamics, I would say you have a bad coil and I would have to guess it is #6 closest to the firewall.
