I've got a 98 328i with keyless entry. It's nice an all, but the transciever is on a seperate and rather large fob, which I find somewhat annoying. Annoying to the point were I'll probably just use the door locks if I can't do something about it. Anyone know if it's possible to get a newer all-in-one key cut that'll work with my 98?
From searching this forum I know it's possible to reprogram the car to accept a new transciever, but I'm not clear on the keys and the little chips they have in them that unlock the ignition. I've done some googling and see several stories about how there's only 10 keys in the world that can be used with any given BMW, and if I want new ones I've got to have half the car replaced, marry some tribal chieftain's ugliest daughter, etc. Is this true, or has technology progressed to the point were it's possible to reprogram a car key?
I'm going to ask the dealer about it when I get my oil changed next week, but in the past odd-ball questions like this have been met with blank stares, so I'm thinking they might not be too helpful with this.
