Ok, I havent been around for a while for good reason. While I was teaching my sister drive my '92 325i, she miss-shifted from 5th to 2nd. The thing is, it was only at 40 mph, but none the less it sucked a valve and messed up the head. The head is at the machine shop right now, being evaluated, and the mechanics have the lower end apart checking that out and making sure the pistons, rods and crank is fine. Sh!t happens, what are you going to do. But with all the labor and everything to put it back together, the shop recomended that I look for a replacement engine to put in the car. So I have a few questions... Just let me know what you think...

Option 1) Get an exact replacement which will probably have more than 88k (what my '92 had on it) and have it installed

Option 2) Have my '92 88k engine rebuilt and suck up the added cost

Option 3) Get an ///M3 engine and drop that in, go big or go home style.....

Let me know what you think....

So what's the plan for teaching? I made her sit in car, engine off, for 10 minutes and shift 1,2,3,4,5 5,4,3,2,1. When she could do that without looking, or missing, I sat with her and picked gears at random for her to shift to. Tonight we were going to take a few laps around the block.

all this worry about missing gears seems a bit excessive!
how in the hell are you going to screw up UNLESS you are dumping clutch into a lower gear while running hard. i mean, ive been driving a standard for a long time, and i miss sometimes too, but its easy to NOT let it slip into gear if you arent ready!

forget renting a car, just tell them to remember to be slow with the clutch and feel the engine grab the wheels. besides, keep the down shifting level to when they are smoother at up shifting.

Where can you even rent a manual - equipped car? Every rental car I've ever seen or been in has always been an automatic.

I've been wanting to teach my girlfriend, but she's been scared to learn on my car. She's paranoid that she's going to break something. She came up with an idea that might work. She said that we ought to go to the Honda dealer and act like we are interested in buying a Civic. Then take it for the afternoon "to see if we like it" and use it to teach her. We both hate Hondas, and I guess she doesn't feel bad about "abusing" one. LOL.

I didnt even think about that...living in Europe almost everyone drives manual....even the driving schools only teach manuals......

well, no ///M engine, but all is good. The head is still perfect, I got a new set of SS valves and springs and a german spec exhaust cam. The block is fine as are the pistons, rods and crank. Its going abck together as we speak and should be done by fri!
