So here's the deal. I drive a 95 318i and it is in good condition. About a month ago the check engine light came on and when i checked it out it was a bad O2 sensor. I changed it today but when i did the surging (in first and second gear) became much worse, almost to the point where i can't even use them. I thought that it might be because i need to reset the computer but when i did the the problem persisted. This is all i know and when i called the mechanic that put it in he said he was stumped untill i could bring it in next week. There is one other piece of information that may aslo be of interest. I don't have a speedo on my car becase a screw came loose in my differential and bent one of the fins that reports speed and the bent fin breaks off the sensor as it goes around so i cannot fix it till i change oer the entire differential but this has been this way for a long almost a year. This is the first time i have ever tried a BMW forum so if i made any ediquite mistakes please forgive me and tell me the right thing to do, and if you have heard about this problem before i would sure appreicate soem feedback.

Thanks in advance,
Nicholas

Did you have any luck getting it fixed? My 1992 325 has check engine, 1221 code, but only surged twice (I thought it was unrelated) in the last 2 months since the light came on. Going to change the o2 sensor when I can find one cheap. Has anyone out there had trouble replacing an o2 sensor, I thought it was just out with the old, in with the new...wham bam...well you know the rest.

got it

yeah i found a large hole on the bottom of the intake boot. that was why the O2 code was coming up. It was just happenstance that the surging got way worse when i changed the O2 sensor. If you live in a warm place then you probably wont notice the surging as bad or as quickly. i would check around the engine while it is running for a leak and pull the throttle to make the engine rock a little to see if anything opens up. Goodluck my man.
