i found a really good deal on a 1997 m3 it is in really good condition but has a salvage title because the interior and stuff was stolen out of it and it was later fixed, but when it was auctioned off it had no battery in it so they did not report any mileage........so it has a mileage rollback title thingy........but........someone told me that i could go to a bmw dealership and get them to plug up directly to the engine and tell me the exact mileage? is that possible?

there isn't any way to check mileage on the S52 M3 DME... sorry. Only newer cars have redundantly systems where you couldn't cheat (prog. the EEprom of the cluster) the exact mileage as easy as in our cars 
In newer cars you can read the mileage out of the DME and in some models only out of the car-key.
In addition you can negotiate a much lower price without the knowlegde of the real mileage. Check the compression off all cylinders and read the fault codes... to get to know the condition of the engine.
