Do you know if it is a cartridge-type or the spin-off canister type?
If you are having a problem , it's probably the cartridge-type. Locate the metal cylinder on the side of the engine , its lid is held on by a hex-head bolt that runs the depth of the cylinder. Remove this bolt and lift off the lid. Be careful not to lose or damage the washers and gaskets if you don't have the replacements that come with the BMW filter.
