Guys, I need some expert advice..... ive had my 92 325i for a while now and every so often i go out with my friends to mess around with the asian tuning crowd around my town... tonight i missed a shift .... i was around 85-90mph and i missed 4th and dropped into 2nd....not good. after shifting out into neutral, my car died while coasting and i couldnt get it started up again right away... after a few minutes i cranked it over and the whole car was shaking and its sounded horrible....

i realize that i seriouly messed something up in the engine but im curious to know what it may have been and how much im going to have to shell out for this kind of repair..... it can drive (because i drove it into a nearby parking lot once i got it cranked) but the enging is weak and sounds and feels horrible....... this just happened about an hour ago (about 12:45am) and to be honest im kinda scared to take it into my mechanic....any knowledge is helpful!!!!

Could be a number of things, running through the entire Driveline. From the Engine, on to the Gearbox, right through to the Diff.

Take it for a cruise (close to home) and go through the motions with it. Slow, fast, accelerate, casual. Give it all it can take for 500 metres etc etc. Let it idle for 30 seconds ... rev it out for 5. Whilst doing these things make a mental note of what happens for everything. Even stop to write them down if you have to.

Would help us get a better idea of exactly what's happening, and someone may be able to point you in the proper direction.

AHHH, the same thing happened to me...

http://www.bmwboard.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3921

Cost me $2700 to get everything taken care of. And a couple weeks of not having my car. Here is my prognosis. Over-rev and sucked the valves on two or more cylinders. Right now the valves are bent and stuck in the open (down) position. That rapping you are hearing is the piston beating against the valve. The entire engine will have to be torn down. You will definitely need new Valves and springs, escpecially since at least two of them are going to be mangled. You will probably need to have your head re-machined if it is any good at all, depending on how hard you bent the valves. You may need new pistions depending on how much damage has been done to the surface of them. You may need new rods, pins or even a crank. And if you break a rod. It will go through the side of you block. But it may be cracked and you may need a new one anyways. While you are in there, put some good aftermarket valves in (I went with +1mm Stainless Steel) and try and find a new exhaust cam. You can go with a german spec one or find a good one from dinan or something. I made out good. I had the head resurfaced and shaved a little to give me some more compression. For me pistons, pins, rods, crank and block were all ok. So i was lucky and made it out on the cheap side and it still cost me $2700 + an exhaust cam. Not trying to be a pessimist here, but just letting you know everything that could have happened.

Good Luck!

awww that suxxx

ok hers a tip, ull never *** up

angle ur force on the knob:

3>>2 diagonnaly left. have ur palm facing you.
and 3>>4 diagonally right. have the backside of ur hand facing u.

as u push down

U WILL NEVER MISS. IMPOSSIBLE, unless u have a 6spped then u can sometims accidenly go 3>>6 in which case ur jsut lost the race, thats all but thats rare bc 5th/6 need a bit xtra push.

also u can feel it. there is resistance in 3>>2 but 3>>4 just slides in. remember u dont need force, just a firm push and it will go in, u prolly shoved it in there and therefore didnt feel the resistance, trust me u shift just as fast with a firm, diagonal push.

dammit after reading this i dont knwo what to do, my girk asked me to teach her and i said sure thing but now i dont know what to do . . . maybe she'll forget.

oh an kev, very blunt a realistic post, you basically told our friend that he's effed either way.

lets hope kev's post is worst case scenario. [/B]
Yeah, like I said, on my car, I was lucky and didnt have to replace anything outside fo the valves and a voluntary replacement of the exhuast cam. Besides that and the charges from the machine shop for the head work, it was about $1500 just for labor. I hope te rest of your engine is in good shape, but if you follow the sequence, that is just all of the things that could have happened.

On the lighter side, it could be completely coincidental that the car is running rough and you could have lost some coil packs, as that is another thing that is prone to go on '92's especially if they are in the vicinity of 100k on the clock. If you are going to replace them, they arent too terribly hard, just get the ones from a '94.

You could probably save yourself some agrivation and indirectly, possibly some $$$ if you figure out which cylenders arent firing prior to taking it in. Its simple, just put you hand (VERY breifly) on the exhaust manifolds. The ones that arent firing will be cold and the others will be super hot. If you have more than two out, I would have it towed to the garage, but if its just a short drive and you only have one or two out, you could probably drive it in and be ok.

Like I said, I have been though this one already, so If you have anyother questions, let me know. email me: [email protected] . If you were in NH, I could give you a really good garage to go to.....

I feel your pain! I usually don't post on this forum but in this situation I felt it was my duty. This happened to me about 2 months after I had purchased my 2001 330ci. I almost cried. First of all do not even try to drive your car or start it up. It will just cause further damage. Just tow it on in. I had mine towed to the dealership and once they found out what had happened they quoted me about 5 grand. I was driving around 105mph when I magically shifted into either 3rd or 1st instead of 5th. To date this is the stupidest thing I have done. I ended up bending every single exhaust valve and I think I might have bent my intake valves as well but that was all the damage. My cyclinder heads were fine, crank was fine, as well as the rest. One thing that ended up saving my ass was my insurance. I had full coverage and claimed it under my comprehensive policy. My insurance company told me no over and over but after numous phone calls and letters from the dealership as well as myself I was able to get it covered. I also managed to negotiate the price down to about 3600 bucks with the dealership. This was a long process but well worth it in the end. If the is anything else I can do to help please let me know. By the way my insurance company was Mercury. THEY SUCK! Hope this helps.

Do a compression test and inspect the spark plugs.

You probably bent some valves as Kev said. This can be an easy fix if you can take the head off yourself and then either fix it by removing and installing new valves or taking them to the shop. It's unlikely that you have any piston damage as valves are soft and tend to bend off center under even small stress. (plus they're over 1000 degrees at 90mph which softens them more)

So.. start with a compression test and while the plugs are out, look at them to check for bending and foreign damage. A bent tip could tell you that something broke in the combustion chamber, if it was a valve that broke off, you could have piston damage in that cylinder.

This is assuming of course that you know what you are doing, have knowledge of the engine and quite a bit of mechanical know how. It is such a finely tuned engine, I didnt want to mess with it. I have no quams about pulling apart an old hemi 426, my chevy 350 or even my 32v 4.6l Cobra engine in the lincoln, but I had ZERO desire to mess with that bimmer engine.
