all depends on the car. i wanted to repaint a newer car cuz it was a good price but i just hated the color it was, the seller told me it wouldn't be a good idea to re-paint it cuz it would bring down the value of the car and the job wouldn't look nearly as nice as the quality as the origninal paint (besides it being a different color). maybe someone could second that, i don't know if it's completely true.
i was looking at getting my car painted too, i have a 93' though so you could take some spray paint to it and it would look better than it does now (not really though, its just in pretty bad shape. It just depends on how good you want it done. Some places offer paint jobs just to sell your car, its cheap but not good, other places do a good job for cheap they just dont finish it (wet sand). Look around for a good price and a good warranty, i wouldnt get anything without a warranty.
my cousin does estimates for the busiest and best autobody shop in my city, and he told me to paint my car properly would cost about 3000 dollars canadian.
shops called A1 and they do a pro job: they remove all non-paintable stuff on the car (they don't try and cover it with tape), they remove ALL surface imperfections prior to painting including any rust or loss of body metal and all bumps or divots, they use great paints, and they have 4 down draft paint bays.
so i would assume a similar job in your city would run you about 2200 us dollars.

A good paint job at body shop starts at about 5,000. anything lower then that probably isnt going to be done correctly. you can get it done cheaper but they will probably just tape off everything, and your bound to have flaws. if you dont mind your car not being perfect, then by all means get something cheaper. your best bet is to buy your own paint and find someone out of the biz to paint it. Thats what my friend did and it looks SWEET. Cost him about 2000.
Hmmm, I gotta disagree with that. A custom paint job, such as one that you might put on a restored classic car, starts at +/- $5000, and certainly the sky is the limit. But you don't need to or WANT to spend that much on a daily driver repaint. Most people don't take care of their car to warrant spending that kind of money.
In our area, you can get a decent quality private body shop job for $1200 - $1500 that looks nice on a daily driver, $2500 for a premium daily driver paint job. I just got quotes for my '84 Pontiac Firechicken that I was thinking about restoring, but I'll probably just get rid of it.
Of course, MAACO will do the $299 "Presidential Service" (which is one step above doing it youself with 20 cans of Rustoleum and a case of beer.)
