Is there a very noticible difference between the before vanos 325i's and the 318i's?? I drove a 325 with vanos and one without, there is much more power after vanos. How does this work?

The vanos system keeps the valve adjustment in the optimal position. Depending on rpm, VANOS keeps the valves in the right position. So it pulls nice all the way through the rev range. The newer BMW engines in the US, anyway have double VANOS so the system adjusts the intake and the exhaust valves. The single VANOS engine only adjust the intake valves. I wish my E36 M3 had double VANOS, the European version have them on their E36 M3 and 286bhp. Damn our emission standards, it just isn't fair..[:(] Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 1997 BMW 5 series was the first to see the Double vanos system. In America.[wave] [driving]

I was pretty sure that single vanos was in the 325i starting in 93 and double vanos in 95.
I also may be wrong...

my 318is have been seeming sluggish , the check engine light is on , and when i give it gas it feels like it doesnt respond and like the pedal feels funny, also sometimes kinda gets stuck and you have to push it hard? could this be vanos related? i have a 1993 318is

If the check engine light is on, then you need to have the car checked out. There could be a number of reason why the car is sluggish. Good luck though, wish that I could help.

also when your check engine light is on, depending on the code, it will throw the dme into a loop (for sure w/ vanos, not sure on the 4cyl) and cut power so you don't eff things up further.

The S62 is BMW's first V-8 engine equipped with Double VANOS , a system that steplessly varies the timing of both intake and exhaust valves on both cylinder banks. (Current BMW 2.5- and 2.8- 3.2-liter 6-cylinder engines also have the Double system)
