Hey guys, everytime i start my car and start driving, i have a hissing/ticking sound coming from the engine after i accelarate and let go of the gas pedal. The sound goes away after a few minutes but it is still annoying and i dont know if it harms the engine or not. Any help would be appreciated.

make sure you got enough oil in that engine. That's what it sounds to me like. However, am not sure. But my Mazda 626 use to do that and when it starts, that tells me it needs more oil.

Does it only happen when the AC is on....could be the compressor. My AC compressor takes a few minutes to quiet down. Put a screwdriver to your ear and touch it to the engine with the beauty cover off and you can locate a tick. Sometimes injectors make quite a bit of noise and that is normal. Also, could be engine knock if you are running 89 octane or cheap gas. When was the last time the car had a oil change and what oil are you running as far as weight? So far sounds like nothing to worry about.

it happens when the ac is off. so i dont think its the compressor. As for the gas, I use 89 octane Shell. For oil, i use 5w-30 synthetic mobil one oil. my last oil change was about 2000 miles ago.

Put some good gas in the thing for a change and I bet the knocks go away. I always run super. At least TRY it for a week and see if it helps.[thumb]
agreed to the general topic of good gas. though bmw's won't usually knock with any gas, when pushed to extreme levels or just everyday driving in awkward weather can cause knock.

i always run the highest octane (within reason) a station offers. usually 93, sometimes 92 and 91. but 95% of the time its 93.

my logic is, be nice to your engine because it will be nice back.

if it,s a ticking sound then it must be something in the engine that is rotateing so i,d go for the cam, it might be a bit dry at first but then gets oiled or something like the lifters .
Get the engine flushed then put some good grade oil in and see if this helps

if you want to play with the big boys you have to use big boy things....for example, in my opinion, 93 octane would be using a big boy thing considering your driving a BMW[driving]...like frolf said, treat your engine right and it will do the same... [burnout]
