My Radio deck (stock) head unit is acting up. The display is not lighting up, you can still see digits on the screen, but the normal red illumination part of it is not working...so you cannot see it in the dark. What could the problem be, and is there any way you know to fix it? The radio on the deck also is tempermental as it works sometimes and other times it does not. When it is not working I can tap the top of the dash (ghetto) and sometimes it will come back on right away or within about 30 seconds. I suppose it could be a loose connection, which is also a problem because when I have tried to take the deck out, the screws that you have to unscrew are some sort of strange shape that I cannot find a tool to fit.

Any help is very much appreciated!

Hey man, yeah I know how confusing that nonsense can be....

To take the radio out, you need an allan key / wrench; it's a small one; I don't recall the size off hand, but it's small.

The cutting in and out is probably a loose connection (hard for me to believe seeing how difficult is was removing the harness from the radio). As far the light not working...slamming it will never make it come back on. I was told that it's really expensive to fix and more cost efficient to replace. I went on ebay and bought a new one from a 1998 M3 for about $85. Took me about an hour to replace. I prefer the stock look, so I went to EBAY; you could also go aftermarket. I was lucky enough to get a practically new radio, so the sound quality was much improved. I'll look up the size for you and post it later.
