re-setting indicator lights

How do I reset my "check engine" and "brake pads" indicator lights on my 1993 325i? Can I just disconnect the battery, or do I need a special re-set tool?

Also, what reasons does the "check engine" light go on? I've changed the oil, air filter, all fluids, cleaned fuel injectors, etc. but the indicator light is still on! Thanks in advance for any help.

The brake pad sensor is something that requires you to, well, change the pads I think you need to replace the censor when you replace the pads...

the brake pads were just changed about 2000 miles ago, but the light's still on. Odd?

the censor may be worn. there are 2 of them. i just changed my pads and the censor is still on. i also gotta get my rotors turned because its squealing like a mofo when i drive really slow.
