i have a 96 328is. the high pitch whining noise from behind the glove box has turned into a growling noise. this noise starts when i start the car, lasts for about 2 minutes, then shuts down. is there a fan or something in that area. i opened the hood, and could hear the noise, but could not locate anything that is visible. is some thing tucked away that you can't see?

It could me a vent motor sticking. If you change you heat/AC settings does it still do it, or do it again when you change the settings? Try changing the air distribution levels.

it only does it when i first start the car. it goes away in about two minutes. i have shut off the fan completely, and it still makes the noise. i have adjusted the temp settings and nothing seems to effect it. weird.

Try switching the recycle button to the recycle cabin air mode than start the car, does this do anything? The reason I ask is I had a vent door motor on my 318 that made noise when first started, but if I switched the recycle button it quit.

Back behind all that stuff under the dash, seriously I never replaced mine even though I had new motors. I sold it as is and the new owner was going to repair it. Maybe someone else can clue us in on their location.
