It might be the valves, when was the last time the lifters were adjusted?

If you're expecting to have tons of power after a cold start (and i know it's cold where you are too), then you're off. I can't think of any car's that run 100% right after a cold start.

Check your fuel filter, and check for vacuume leaks. You getting any check engine lights?

They are self adjusting. You cannot adjust them -- lifters itself are not adjustable.

The slight tick is normal from injectors. How loud is it and when does it tick ie. under load, on idle?

it only ticks at idle speeds and then goes a way after the engine revs up. ther are no engine lights. besides listening how would i find vaccuum leakes?

should it think about upgrading these ignition coils.. or at least replace .. if so where is the best place to purchase these. does that mean it will have wires? i haven't really messed witht this car in fear ill screw it all up (to be honest).

-thanks

Yes when you remove the plastic cover, you will see the ignition coils and thin wires. The wires are ok but maybe you need new coils especially after 189,000 miles.

You can visit: http://www.bavauto.com/ to see how much are the coils for your car.

Change your spark Plugs, and fuel filter. The ticking noise could also come from the Vanos, which will be expensive to fix. It is hard to diagnost the problem when you can't hear the sound. If you are not shure what it is, than its realy good to take it to the service.

To see if you have any vacum leaks, take a starter fluid and try to spray in places around clamps, hoses, intake etc. (when the engine is on) if the starter fluid will enter the engine it will die or at least try to die. But Im pretty shure that you dont have any vacum leaks.

hmm ok thanks man do you have any idea about the tick... or would the injector cleaner help witht hat as well?
A subtle fuel injection tick is very normal...

My pick-up has slightly louder ticks, but heavier duty.

I would ask the dealer if the sound is a typical F. Injector sound ???

And-

Use Supper Daddy's advice too, get some red-line FI cleaner.

You just may be worrying more than needed.

VANOS is Variable Valve Timing System - This Results in smoother idling as well as increased torque and acceleration at low and medium speeds, enabling the driver to respond confidently.

It uses two chains instead of belt. In some cases this chains or bearings go bad, sometimes causing ticking noise.

If you feel loss of performance, this might just be one of the thing to inspect. Sometime it can simply be some plastic ratteling at idle.

However after 189,000 miles I suggest to change the ignition coils, spark, plugs, fuel filter, Engine flush would also help a lot, It can even get rid of the ticking noise, of course this will include new engine oil. Flush the cooling system and change new coolant (use only BMW Antifreeze coolant). Check the belts, water pump. You should do this soon if you don't remember when was the last time this was performed.
