Ticking (Sticking Lifters)?

Alright guys. I have a 01 540i 6spd with 82,000 miles. Been trying to do some reserch on this, but all I have found was simple explanations and a considerable amount of other 5er owners with the same problem. I have a ticking which can sound like a diesel engine running, but not to that extreme loudness. It however can be noticed in cabin when idling. I believe that it is the lifters sticking. My questions are what exactly can be done to remedy this and how costly can it get? Also what can cause these lifters to stick like this and is there anything that can be done other than going into the engine? I have had oil changes with proper oil and no change in the sound. It only ticks at idling, with a hot or cold engine. The cars performance however does not seem to be affected. It just drives me crazy to come to a stop and here it ticking and rattling. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It could possibly be the water pump, early sign of the bearings going kaput.
Is it more like a ticking/grinding sound that goes like a train's rhythm?

I have that same problem too, and it's almost embarassing to keep my engine on when at idle. haha I'm going to my uncle's shop within the next week so that he can check it out. I'll let you guys know what he comes up with.

I've noticed the M60 and M62's make a ticking - even worse than my 535i's motor (which is notorious for ticking becuase of the valvetrain design).

Yeah the M62 in my old man's 740iL has a slight ticking noise at idle too. It's always serviced at our BMW dealership and they've never said it'd be a problem. Having said that though, the tickin in our E38 is pretty damn slight...

Not really a grinding more of a ticking. I asked my Indy about it and he said not alarm for concern but eventually it could be a problem if in the future it causes the engine to file and start backfiring. I just hate the way it sounds it's like you have this beautiful car that sounds like a piece of crap when at stop sign, readlight or in a parking lot. Its probably not as bad as I think I just have my ear tuned to the sound and can pick it it up quickly. Anyone know the cost of lifter replacement?

For what it's worth mine used to tick a little. I used a couple bottles of Redline SI-1 over time as mentioned before, and I use synthetic 5w-40 and it is very quiet now. I also fixed a vacuum leak but I don't know if that affected the ticking. It sure affected the idle roughness, which actually might have ended up affecting the ticking too because of the timing being smoother with the injectors and not the "shuddering" at idle.

you think you have a ticking noise you should hear my car (E39 m5 2002) not so much when the engine is warmed up but when it is cold it sounds just like a dieslel engine. It could be the resault of running the vehicle before it is warmed up constantly. to get the lifters replaced? Wow i wouldn't want that bill.

hehe it seems bmw can't make an engine idle great - but I would assume it is the tradeoff for the performance.
