jim conforti is a popular chip around here. not sure what kind of gains you can expect with your particular car, but the shift points will be higher, no speed govener, and the redline will be raised maybe 200rpm.

back to the traction control. some people like it better to start without it as a little slip is not bad at all. the ASC regulates the amount of gaz and the brakes to prevent the skidding. result of that is, that when one tire starts spinning the engine gets cut down and you loose punch. for dry pavement accel it is better to switch it off. for turns and wet, it is way better to have it on. it helps not to spin out.
