Transmission Fluid leak

My car had quite the problem shifting for quite sometime, generally just out of first and after I came to a stop. Naturally I thought my tranny was going, so I brought it in to get the bad news. As it turns out, the tranny fluid has been leaking somewhere. My "mechanic" konws nothing about BMWs and being from extreme northern Minnesota I would have to travel about 300 miles to bring it to someone who works on BMWs' so he could tear it apart and tell me I need a $20 seal. So, I was hoping somebody had a clue or a similar problem at one time. It looks like it could be leaking in the front or the back of the pan, or maybe both.

Any advice would be appriciated!!

fogot one thing, the tranny is absolutely fine, even after having ZERO tranny fluid in it for about 1000 miles (try that with an American or Japanese car). So as long as I can figure out how to stop the leak, I will be in the clear.
