When the car (93 325 auto 190,000 mi) heats up after driving the transmisson light comes on and there is a movement in the transmission similar to putting the transmission in first gear( auto) and then the car loses power and everything is retarded. I will drive very slow but if I pick up speed is almost like the engine is normal running at higher speeds, but if I stop the car it will again lose power.
Sometimes I will continue driving and the light goes out the power returns but if I stop at a light after a minute at the stop light the transmission light will return and the cycle continues.
I spoke to shop owners and one very nice bmw mechanic said that sometimes the switch for manual and automatic will go out and create problems for the transmission.
He could not be sure what it was. I asked if there was a sensor that could have malfunctioned but he said he did not know.
Has anyone had their transmission light come on and what was the problem and solution.
Any suggestions such as : can this trouble be assessed by hooking up the transmission to a testor to diagnose the problem .
Second question: am I doing more damage to the transmission by driving it in this condition.
I just found a reply by pelican parts that suggested checking the transmission control molule at a BMW specialty shop.
I took it in today 10-1 and the shop mechanic is checking the diagnostic
codes. Want to thank the pelican part Inc for the suggestion that I had stored in my old email.[???1]
Thanks for any information that can be provided,
