A used-car sales friend quoted me this:
2004(of course) X3 3.0, auto, 4,000 miles. Asking: $34,200.
I don't have the details yet but how does it sound in general?

Thanks for the help!

I'd ask for a copy of all the service records and test drive it, there might be something wrong with it you never know. That or they bought the X3 and decided it was hideous and want out...

It's loaded with at the minimum Premium Package, might even be Sport P. or has a few 'sporty' items.

Sounds good, right? He said it's a rental car...

It sounds like a good price to me. I also think you will be covered for a while by the warranty. And just think, you are going in after the big depreciation hit. Based on what I see of the projected resale value of the X3, way better than the 3 series now, you will be in a very good position down the road. Even if you put no cash down, you may have positive equity in 1 year, whereas buying new you may find yourself in a negative equity position by about 3,000.00-5,000.00. If it’s in good condition it could be a good move.

Thanks much for your inputs!

The latest scoop: It's from the Manheim Car Auctions. He actually saw three of them with similar prices, all under 5K mi, all loaded, all from highline car rentals.

Still a good move, right?

Chances are they are going to be picked up by a dealer and sold on a lot for a lot more anyway. To be honest I would get a bit uneasy about the rental part and make sure there is a warranty in place through BMW. It really depends on how you look at it. Some people buy used at a dealer and buy “executive used” or “corporate lease return” and there is still really no way to be absolutely sure about what the car has been through.

Do you need to buy after looking alone or do you get to inspect the car?

well i guess i could ask to inspect the car but really i don't have the expertise to find anything but i have faith in my friend. he also cautioned that there're just not many out there to choose from.
